Types of Leadership

Every day we come across leaders in school, business, and life, and each has their own unique approach to managing others. The way people use their power and authority differs from person to person, but there are some recurring patterns. In business theory, there are two main types of leaders: instrumental and expressive. Instrumental leaders are very demanding individuals. Leaders of this type expect their employees to be professional and focused on work rather than on relationships with their colleagues. In contrast, expressive leaders are concerned about employee well-being. They believe strong relationships and a positive work environment improve a group's overall productivity.

Beginning next May, students are required to volunteer at least 100 hours at a local charitable organization in order to graduate. By helping give back to the community, the university is hoping that we will improve our relationship with the community through student involvement in local affairs. Additionally, we believe that this initial volunteering experience will inspire students to continue to give back to those less fortunate, even after graduation.

PART 3

 1 - Organizational psychology

Organizational psychology had its origins in the early 20th century. Sometimes referred to as industrial psychology, organizational psychology is concerned with how humans work and interact in various jobs and organizations. It was only later in the century that the field of organizational psychology developed as an experimental science. Unlike most other academic fields, business leaders immediately understood how research into worker psychology and productivity could have a positive impact on both the worker's well-being and the company's profit margins. Leading organizational psychologists of the early 1900s soon found themselves outside of the classroom and into the factories, conducting research.

1. What is the main focus of organizational psychology?

2. Infer the answer. Why might organizational psychologists have conducted research

directly in factories rather than only in academic settings?

3. According to the text, is it true that organizational psychology was not useful to

business leaders when it first appeared? Explain.

4. In the passage, what does the word margins most nearly mean?

2 - Renewable energy

While the global transition towards renewable energy has accelerated over the past decade, significant obstacles remain that impede its full integration into national energy grids. Unlike conventional fossil fuel sources, renewable technologies such as wind and solar power are inherently intermittent, requiring sophisticated storage solutions and flexible infrastructure to ensure a consistent supply. Additionally, the geopolitical implications of renewable energy adoption cannot be overlooked: as countries pivot away from oil and gas dependence, new forms of competition and cooperation are emerging around critical resources like rare earth elements used in photovoltaic cells and battery technologies. Policymakers face the complex task of designing frameworks that incentivize innovation while simultaneously safeguarding energy security and affordability. Ultimately, the shift towards renewables is not solely a technological undertaking but a multifaceted transformation encompassing environmental, economic, and social dimensions.

1 - What is the main focus of the text?

2 - Why does the text suggest that renewable energy integration requires flexible

     infrastructure?

3 - According to the text, what critical resources are becoming strategically important due

     to renewable energy technologies?

4 - What does the word “intermittent” most nearly mean as used in the text?
