A - Compassionate Consumerism

Compassionate consumerism is a relatively new trend in the American retail market. In this type of consumerism, when individuals make a purchase a portion of the money they pay is allocated to a charitable cause. Nowadays, individuals often look for ways to contribute to the betterment of humanity, but they don't always have the financial resources to do so. Compassionate consumerism appears to be a good middle ground. While critics feel that it's only a marketing ploy aimed at appealing to people in their 20s and 30s, others applaud the effort. They argue that it is desirable for companies to sacrifice profits in order to help those in need.

After explaining the topic, the interlocutor may ask you questions like these ones:

1 - You detect that some customers support your company’s social values, while others see them as irrelevant to purchasing decisions. How would you adapt your sales message to both groups without compromising the brand’s principles?

2 - Sales data shows that a socially responsible product is valued by customers but sells less because it is more expensive. How would you balance commercial objectives with ethical values in your sales approach?

3 - You notice that halfway through the month, sales of products or services that support people in need are below target. How would you analyze the reasons behind this situation and what actions would you take to improve results while staying aligned with the company’s social mission?

B - Meal Plan

As of right now, the school offers only one meal plan to students, which permits them to eat at the cafeteria once per day for the entire school year. The problem with this is that there are students who ore busy with part-time jobs away from campus and don't have time to eat at the cafeteria on a daily basis. Since these students still want to eat at the cafeteria occasionally! believe it would be best if the school started to sell meal plans that provide a specific number of meals which students can eat whenever they want. Not only will this be more convenient, but it will also increase the cafeteria's income as a greater number of students will consider taking advantage of its services.

Sincerely,

A - Cultivation

In countries like Niger and Mauritania, the cultivation of land has changed little in the past several centuries. Additionally, these countries’ mono-modal rainfall pattern brings precipitation for only three months during the year. As a result, food production doesn’t nearly meet demand. Several agencies and organizations have intensified their efforts to increase the productivity of land in these countries. They have introduced new strains of seed, improved irrigation techniques, and introduced new methods of fertilization and soil management. With ample sunlight for photosynthesis and modern irrigation techniques, sustainable farming techniques should allow farmers to boost aggregate production in order to meet demand. Still, crop revitalization faces an unexpected adversary: institutional incompetence.Where crop specialists have convinced individual farmers to abandon old farming techniques in place of new, they can’t readily obtain the governmental cooperation they need. The biggest hurdles are political corruption, incompetence, and the absence of a marketing infrastructure

1 - What is the main problem described in the text, and what are the primary factors contributing

to it?

2 - What solutions have agencies and organizations introduced to improve food production, and

why have these efforts had limited success?

3 - According to the text, what institutional barriers prevent sustainable farming techniques from fully addressing food shortages?

Listen to the lecture and take notes. Using the main ideas and examples presented, the interlocutor will ask you  how personal attitudes and behaviors influence the interpretation of interview outcomes.

Children should learn commercial issues at school because early exposure to how markets, money, and consumption work helps them better understand the world they already participate in. From a young age, children are surrounded by _______________________, yet they often lack the tools to interpret them critically. Teaching basic commercial concepts—such as budgeting, responsible consumption, and how advertising influences behavior—can promote informed decision-making and prevent ______________________.
